Charlie Forte : The Hairdresser
Imagine a girl coming into your shop, someone you’d never seen before in your life, and having her tell you all about yourself and your upcoming exhibition. This bewildering experience happened to me recently, and when I asked her how she knew these things about me, she replied, “Charlie up the road told me”. That explained everything — Charlie the hairdresser, Charlie the Keith Richards of hairdressing, Charlie the rock star of hairdressing without ever trying to be one. I’ve known Charlie for 25 or 30 years, as he owns and runs HDC Hairdressing, smack in the heart of Fitzroy, near the corner of Brunswick and Johnston streets. He’s a livewire, a great friend, and, it must be said, he does a great haircut. However, try not to rob a bank with loose-lipped Charlie, because if you do, then most of Fitzroy and the neighbouring three suburbs will probably know about it by lunchtime the next day. I’m honoured to have captured this charismatic person on canvas.
