Living the Dream: Joseph Zbukvic
Joseph is one of the most celebrated watercolour artists of our time. His book Mastering Atmosphere and Mood in Watercolor: The Critical Ingredients that turn Paintings into Art is a masterclass of the medium. He’s won over 200 awards and prizes, nationally and internationally, and had over 40 solo exhibitions. You can find his works in galleries and private collections in Australia, Italy, the US and China, and you can find instructional videos of him on Youtube with hundreds of thousands of views. From time to time, I have the good fortune of him popping into the Evelyn. It was Julien who introduced Joseph to me, and we instantly had a lot in common artistically, even though our mediums and styles are very different. Sometimes it’s those very differences that drive a fascinating conversation about art. I’ve known Joseph for over 20 years, and my respect for his work, artistic style, career and accomplishments resembles nothing less than awe, so Joseph was a clear choice for an Archibald sitter. We often catch up for breakfast on Brunswick Street, or dinner at my place.
